The ancient medina of Marrakech is a beguiling labyrinth of alleyways, sites, souks and workshops where little has changed since the Middle Ages. Absorb the local history by visiting the ancient Ben Youssef school, Bahia Palace and viewing the impressive 12th century rampart surrounding the city’s medina – and soak in its colorful, lively and exotic atmosphere.
The Medina is full of intertwining, narrow windowless passageways and shops full of character, packed with a variety of goods from sacks of dates and pomegranates, leather slippers and brightly colored cottons, to carpets, silver, spices and woven goods. The main square in the Medina is Djemaa El-Fna, with something to see day or night whether it be snake charmers, acrobats, sooth-Sayers, or the musicians and food stalls.
There is much to see and do here and the city also makes a great launching pad to the mountains, the coast and the desert sands.
